Lola spent the next morning in the study with Phyllis looking over the Archives. Written in a much older form of English, it wasnât light reading. They found a few pages that had been marked with a star in pencil, all about the concept of time. They surmised that Simon had been looking into it. If only he had left some notes. A note, thatâs what we should leave.
âPhyllis, we should write a note to my father and put it in the book and see if he responds!â exclaimed Lola.
âWhy didnât I think of that? We could get some kind of binder set up and you could write in it whenever we have a message or a question,â suggested Phyllis while tapping a finger to her lips in reflection. âAlso, we could do some research on the concept of time. That seems to be where Simon left off,â she added.
Since Phyllis had some things to attend to, Lola volunteered to do research on her computer and, later, she could try the local library and even get Bonnie to help out, saying it was research for a paper she was trying to write for extra credit over the summer.
They went their separate ways and agreed to discuss the topic further at dinner.
After lunch, Jackson knocked on Lolaâs door and asked if she wanted to leave early, go into town and get her learnerâs permit. She agreed, and they set off. They stopped to see Phyllis and have her sign the consent form. On the drive into town, they reviewed the manual so she could pass the written test. Lola had read it back home when Jane had gotten hers, so she was pretty up to speed. She aced the test and Jackson said she was now ready to hit the road.

She went in for her last shift at the Food Lion. Today, in honor of her last day, and because he figured this might be of some use to her, Xavier showed her the books and had her practice inputting orders, receipts and expenses on the computer. Then he left her alone to man the store for about thirty minutes. She really didnât have to be worried as absolutely no one showed up in his absence.
All too soon it was time to go. She gave Xavier a hug and thanked him for the opportunity. She also said she would be available if he was ever in a jam.
Jackson picked her up and they went home where Lola couldnât wait to show Phyllis her new learnerâs permit!
